Blood Orange Whiskey Sour
I frequently get my cocktail inspirations in the produce aisle of the grocery store. When I'm shopping for fresh, seasonal ingredients for my cooking, I find that drink ideas always appear in my head. Actually that kind of sounds like I have a problem, doesn't it? But it's actually just delicious.
Right now the blood oranges are in season and I can't resist their stunning ruby colored flesh. There are a few different varieties of them and some are sweeter than others. I mostly find them a touch more bitter than traditional oranges which is why I added a bit of sugar syrup to the drink.
I can think of lots of cocktail ideas for these lovelies but I haven't had a whiskey sour in a while and was in the mood for one. It's a strong drink with sweet, sour and bitter notes but it's a great winter sipper and you gotta love the color. Cheers!
Per Serving:
1 1/2 oz. Whiskey
1 oz. Blood orange juice
1/2 oz. Lemon juice
1/2 oz. Simple syrup
Dash of Angostura bitters
Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake well. Pour into a cocktail glass and garnish with fresh blood orange, if desired.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful looking cocktail so much more refined than the well whiskey and gun sour mix whiskey sours I used to drink so many years ago. Thanks for the lovely reminder that I should try one again and what better time than now when there is so much citrus to choose from!
